Baskets carry a special symbolism in Rwanda: friends give them to one another to celebrate milestones (weddings, births, etc.), and they are proudly displayed as a reflection of abundance in friendships, family and life.
The Thousand Hills pattern recalls Rwanda's mountainous terrain. The beautiful design illustrates the mountain ranges that cover the nation and surround the countryside with amazing views. Often referred to as "the land of a thousand hills," Rwanda is composed of countless mountain ranges whose steep slopes are dotted with thousands of terraced farms that seemingly defy gravity and as sure-footed farmers harvest crops from these precipitous plots. Hidden among the hills are thriving vegetation and vibrant wildlife, most famously the rare mountain gorillas. It's been said that Rwandan's terrain offers a democratic beauty, as rich and poor alike are blessed with incredible views of the land and cities.
